I’ve checked out sites like Dover Saddlery and there seem to be a lot of different styles of boots like "field" boots, "show" boots, "cadet" boots, "mountain" boots, etc. I don’t ride but I know that some boots are meant to be worn exclusively while riding and aren’t comfortable to walk in. What style would be the best compromise between sleek-looking and comfortable to walk in?

How much does it own & care for a horse ?
Posted by: | CommentsHi there
Just wondering how much it costs per year to own/keep a horse – on your own land/property (including all food, vaccinations, accessories, care etc) in Victoria, Australia ($AUD) ?
Its just a ‘normal’ horse, being ridden every day, but not showing, racing, or anything else like that.
Glad if anyone can help…. :-) Rachel
if you want a horse for just pleasure then hay is a good thing to feed so it wont cost very much problem $5 $10 maybe but if u want you horse for something else then other foods would be more expensive
shoes normally cost about $50
vet bills depends really on what your checking and of course what the vet charges
so i;d would roughly say about problem 150/200 a year Maybe depends if anything happens like the horse gets sick and u have to take him/her to the vet again or if a horse loses a shoe or something

Posted by: | CommentsIm Looking to own a horse pretty soon
I know all the basics for horse care, and proper
shelter and all that but
About how much should I expect to pay
for feed,and Accessories
also what is the best way to buy
feed,in smaller or larger amounts?
Im not sure about vet care tho,
are there any requirements to owning a horse in
that way,and what are the average cost for vet bills?
I only want one horse because it is my first
but do horses do better alone or with a buddy?
Thanks.
My first question to you is – how much hands on experience do you have with horses? Before you buy a horse, I’d urge you to (1) take some riding lessons at a local stable; and (2) start by leasing a horse first. Owning a horse is very, very expensive and time consuming.
As a general rule, a horse needs 2 to 2.2 pounds of feed for every 100 pounds of body weight. For example, an average 1000 lb horse would need 20 to 25 pounds of feed a day. Most of that should be hay. Call your local feed store and get a price on the best hay you can afford.
Some horses do fine on just hay while others need additional grain. Some will need supplements as well as hay may not provide all the nutrients they need.
The vet will need to come out 2x year to do vaccinations or you will need to buy the vaccinations and do them yourself.
Your horse will need to have his teeth floated every 1-2 years. This is usually done by a vet.
For information on cost, call the vet you plan to use and ask what they will charge for vaccinations/teeth floating. Ask what their basic call charge is as well because every time the vet comes out, you will get charged for it.
You will need to buy a dewormer for your horse and administer it 6x year on a rotational basis.
The farrier will need to come out every 6-8 weeks. At a minimum, your horse’s hoof will need to be trimmed. If he must wear shoes, that’s an additional expense. Some horses need special shoes so that’s even more of an expense.
Your horse will need some sort of bedding in the shelter – straw, shavings, pellets. You will need to have some place to deposit the soiled bedding and manure, as well as the manure you will routinely clean up from his pasture.
Bedding, hay, etc. are all a bit cheaper if you buy them in larger quantities, but you must have some place to keep them. Hay will get moldy if not stored properly and mice/rats can get into the grain if not kept in a safe place.
Horses are herd animals and they definitely do best with another horse. However, some horses do OK alone or with a goat or donkey as a buddy.

How much does it cost to look after a horse per year ?
Posted by: | CommentsJust wondering how much it costs per year ($AUD) to keep a horse – on your own land/property (including all food, vaccinations, accessories, care etc) in Victoria, Australia ?
How often do you have to put new shoes on the horse and how much $ per fit (if riding everyday or two on corrugated road and forest)? Its just a riding horse – not show or anything else.
Glad if anyone can help…. :-)
your horse needs it shoes/ feet clipped like every month-2 moths. Its usually like 25-50 dollars per ferrier visit. but because your riding thorugh the road and forest you will probably break some shoes and will chip feet and may need some more ferrier visits, but you can buy hoof protection to strenghten the hoof. Because you keep your land on your own property, you will pay for board. you will need to buy food, i would say 200 a month? a vet check when you buy a horse is like 100 dollars, and the regular vet checks maybe 100 still. for more serious things, it could bef rom 600-10,000 dollars. accessories- wow. this is where you will prob spend the most money. you need saddle pads (20 dollars each) you will need a saddle (200-800 dollars) a bridle (a good one is like 100, but can buy a cheap ok one for like 25) brushes (curry, soft brush, hard brush, mane, tail, hoof pick,) i would say that is about 50-60 dollars for all of those. you will need LOTS of fly spray- like 15 a bottle, and you will go through a bottle every one and a half week if you ride every day or turn out all day. you will need a blanket for the winter (but you live in Australia so it wont be that cold in winter so you may not need one…) hmmm lets see what else! you will need buckets for food and water, like 5 each so 10 dollars. you will need a halter–15 dollars. a lead rope–10 dollars. Hay! dont forget hay! like 5 bucks a bale, maybe 1-2 bales a day…. wowwwwwwwwwww.
that is alot of money!
25 a month for a ferrier= 300
200 a month= 2,400
Vet check to buy the horse= 100
vet check every 6 months= 200
one saddle pad- 20
saddle (a used, ok one)=350
bridle= like 50
brushes= 60
fly spray= 782.15
buckets- 10
lead rope and halter= 25
hay….= 3,650
thats like 7,922 thousand dollars for the first year.
all together for the FIRST YEAR.
